Seek immediate veterinary care if:
- the patient is unconscious
- bleeding is uncontrollable
- the wounds were inflicted by another animal
- open wounds are greater than 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep
- wounds are greater than 2.5 cm (1 inch) in diameter
- wounds involving the eye
Before you start cleaning any wound it is important to wear rubber or vinyl gloves. As many diseases (such as rabies) are transmitted by direct contact, care should be taken toward your own safety, especially when the cause of the wound is unknown.
Covering the wound with gauze soaked in Wound Comfort beforehand will help prevent clipped hair from adhering to injured surfaces.
Paramount to successful wound management is careful and thorough removal of all hair down to the skin level surrounding the injured area. This can be best accomplished with electric hair clippers or blunt tipped scissors that have been wiped down with rubbing alcohol. Covering the wound with gauze soaked in Wound Comfort beforehand will help prevent clipped hair from adhering to injured surfaces. Once all hair has been satisfactorily removed then use Wound Comfort to flush away the unwanted debris.
Material that is stubbornly encrusted on the wound can almost always be completely removed with persistent dedicated soaking of the area with gauze sponges soaked with Wound Comfort. The initial soaking effort can take up to 15-20 minutes. If any debris remains after initial soaking, tweezers or a clean cotton swab soaked with Wound Comfort can be used for a more detailed cleanup of particulate matter. Alternatively, one can use Wound Comfort's convenient squeeze bottle feature to more aggressively flush and irrigate away foreign debris.
As the wound recovers it is normal and expected for more material to re-accumulate on the wound. As this occurs the task at hand is to simply repeat Wound Comfort soaks on an as needed basis. The first several days of wound recovery may need six or more treatments per day. If the wound does not appear to be resolving by the third day prompt veterinary care is mandatory.
Minor oozing of blood can usually be controlled with direct pressure with sterile gauze sponges. If bleeding continues for more than five minutes seek veterinary care.
Please keep in mind that Wound Comfort is intended only for very minor injuries. ALL BITE WOUNDS REQUIRE VETERINARY CARE. If you are unsure as to the seriousness of the injured area, seek veterinary care! Do not take chances with your pet’s health.
